The Kremlin stated that it is incorrect to describe the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump as canceled, emphasizing instead that complex preparations are still underway, according to state broadcaster Vesti.

Presidents cannot meet just for the sake of meeting; they cannot waste their time, and they are open about that. That is why they instructed Lavrov and Rubio to prepare this process. The process is complex,” said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

Peskov also commented on U.S. sanctions recently imposed on Russian oil giants Lukoil and Rosneft, calling them a ‘hostile step’, but noted that Russia remains committed to building friendly relations with all countries, including the United States.

“Despite the differences expressed by the U.S. president, we must continue to focus on our national interests. Our goal is to build good relations with all countries, including the U.S.,” Peskov told journalist Pavel Zarubin.

He added that Russia will prosecute anyone involved in the potential seizure of frozen Russian assets, calling it a violation of international law.

“Of course, the actions taken this week were a hostile move. They truly damaged the prospects of restoring our relations. But that doesn’t mean we should abandon them. We must do what is best for us,” Peskov concluded.
