Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković has expressed concern over the security and political situation in the Western Balkans, calling for the topic to be addressed at the next European Council meeting. In an interview with France 24, Plenković stressed the importance of the European Union giving urgent attention to the region, Gazeta Express reports.
At a time when several Balkan countries are experiencing major demonstrations and increased Russian influence, Plenković said it is “absolutely necessary to discuss the situation in the Western Balkans at the next European Council.”
He specifically mentioned Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Albania, and North Macedonia as countries that “are ready to accelerate their integration into the EU.”
However, he cautioned that while enlargement is important, the political situation on the ground demands careful attention.
“There is a political situation and tensions that Europe must prioritize. We need to act to ensure stability and support political forces committed to stability and European integration,” Plenković emphasized.
