Poland plans to hand over its remaining Soviet-era MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine in exchange for drone technology, the Ministry of Defence said on December 10.

Poland has already replaced its old Soviet aircraft with American-made F-16s and South Korean-made FA-50s, and is awaiting delivery of the 32 F-35 jets it ordered from the United States.

“MiGs are reaching the end of their service life, which means they will soon be withdrawn from the Polish Armed Forces, and we are discussing their transfer to the Ukrainian side,” Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz told Polish public radio Trojka.

According to Kosiniak-Kamysz, the exchange may also include “the transfer of technologies, for example in the field of drones and missiles, from Ukraine to Poland.”

Poland, which has already supplied many of its MiG-29s to Ukraine since Russia launched its invasion, still has around 14 remaining, according to media reports.

“Talks are ongoing, and we are determined to finalize them as soon as possible,” Kosiniak-Kamysz stressed.

He added that Poland is already benefiting from Ukrainian expertise in military drone training
