Poland and NATO scrambled fighter jets in the early hours of Sunday following a new wave of Russian airstrikes on western Ukraine, the Polish Armed Forces announced.

The entire territory of Ukraine was placed under an air raid alert, while Polish authorities temporarily closed the airspace in the southeast of the country, near the cities of Lublin and Rzeszow, due to “unplanned military activity linked to national security,” according to Flightradar24 citing official sources, as reported by the BBC.

In Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that the city faced a “massive attack,” during which a five-story building was heavily damaged by a drone strike, sending at least three people to the hospital.

This incident comes amid heightened tensions, as Russia has been accused of repeated airspace violations over NATO countries this month, fueling concerns of a potential escalation of the conflict.
