Poland’s Interior Minister, Marcin Kierwiński, announced on Sunday that the country will extend its temporary border controls with Germany until October 4, according to reports from Polish news agencies.

These controls, which were originally set to end on August 5, were widely expected to be extended.

Poland’s central government first introduced the border checks on July 7 in response to ongoing German checks, aimed at curbing illegal migration.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk has signaled that this measure could be lifted if Germany changes its border policy, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported.

Germany has been carrying out random border checks along its frontier with Poland since October 2023, intensifying them after Chancellor Friedrich Merz took office in May. Berlin has also authorized the immediate return of asylum seekers intercepted at the border.

Meanwhile, Tusk’s government in Warsaw is facing growing pressure from right-wing groups that patrol the border areas, looking to intercept undocumented migrants.
