Poland’s Defense Minister has dismissed a high-ranking general responsible for the loss of anti-tank mines, which were eventually discovered in an IKEA warehouse, according to reports by Polish news agency Onet and Politico.
“Minister of Defense has decided to relieve Major General Artur Kępczyński, Chief of the Support Inspectorate, of his duties,” the Polish Ministry of Defense announced.
Kępczyński’s role involved managing the logistics support system. While the official statement did not specify the reasons for his dismissal, local media reports link it to the disappearance of anti-tank mines in June last year—a matter Kępczyński allegedly concealed from his superiors.
Reports indicate that soldiers failed to unload an entire shipment of over 1,000 tons of mines from a train, leaving the shipment circulating across the country before it disappeared. False records were reportedly filed to account for the missing mines.
Authorities became aware of the issue when IKEA contacted the military, asking, “When will you come to collect the mines?” which had been stored in one of their warehouses.
