Poland issued a warning on Tuesday to Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding his planned travel to the summit in Hungary with US President Donald Trump.
Warsaw stressed that it would be obliged to enforce the international arrest warrant if Putin enters Polish airspace on his way to Hungary.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who maintains closer ties with Russia than other EU members, confirmed that Budapest will ensure Putin can enter Hungary for the summit and return safely.
To avoid flying over Ukraine, the Russian delegation would need to pass through the airspace of at least one EU country. The International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant obliges member states to arrest Putin if he enters their territory. While all EU states are ICC members, Hungary is currently in the process of withdrawing.
