Reports of alleged police violence and mass detentions have emerged following student protests in the Ušće area of Novi Beograd, raising fresh concerns about the handling of demonstrations in Serbia.

According to statements shared by student groups on social media, multiple students were detained after protests held near Ušće Park. The demonstrations were reportedly organized in opposition to plans involving fencing parts of the area and constructing an aquarium facility.

Mass Searches and Arrests

Student organizers claim that police carried out widespread searches and arrests, targeting not only protesters but also individuals who were allegedly present in the area at the time. At least six students from various faculties were reportedly detained, according to statements from participating groups.

Eyewitness accounts and videos circulating online appear to show police officers detaining individuals using force. Students allege that officers exited police vans and pursued groups of students without prior warning or clear justification as they were returning from the protest.

Photographs released by students associated with the Studentski Grad area appear to show young men lined up against walls during police searches, further intensifying allegations of excessive use of force.

Rising Tensions Following Previous Incidents

The events in Novi Beograd reportedly occurred one day after similar incidents of alleged violence involving protesters in Novi Sad, contributing to rising tensions between student activists and law enforcement authorities across Serbia.

As of now, there has been no comprehensive official statement detailing the number of arrests or addressing allegations of police misconduct. Human rights advocates and civil society groups are expected to closely monitor developments, particularly regarding detainees’ legal status and treatment.

The protests reflect broader youth dissatisfaction over urban development decisions and governance issues, with student groups increasingly playing a visible role in public demonstrations.
