Police in Montenegro surrounded a residential building in central Podgorica where businessman Aco Đukanović lives, as inspectors reportedly prepared to search his property, according to local media reports.
The operation took place in a building located on Vuka Karadžić Street in Podgorica, where Aco Đukanović, brother of former president and prime minister Milo Đukanović, resides.
Media outlet Vijesti reported that inspectors planned to conduct a search of Đukanović’s assets. In the same building is also a branch of Prva banka Crne Gore, a financial institution owned by Aco Đukanović.
Aco Đukanović is widely considered one of the wealthiest individuals in Montenegro. In late 2006, he acquired shares in Nikšićka Banka and, a year later, renamed it Prva banka Crne Gore. For years, particularly until the Democratic Party of Socialists lost power in August 2020, the bank reportedly held deposits from state-owned companies, ministries, local governments, and business figures close to the ruling party at the time.
The bank’s operations have also drawn scrutiny in the past. In 2012, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project published an analysis citing alleged irregularities in the bank’s activities, referring to documents that reportedly pointed to corruption, poor oversight, and failures to follow anti–money laundering laws and standard banking practices.
Additionally, the NGO MANS previously filed a criminal complaint requesting prosecutors investigate the bank’s lending practices, including unusually favorable loans. Among the cases mentioned was a multimillion-euro loan to Darko Šarić, who was convicted in Serbia for drug smuggling.
Authorities have not yet released detailed information about the scope of the ongoing police action or potential charges.
