Polish President Says Only Trump Can Stop Putin

Donald Trump is the only world leader capable of stopping Vladimir Putin from threatening Europe, according to Polish President Karol Nawrocki.

In an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Nawrocki said that the Russian leader cannot be trusted, but that Europe must do everything possible to support President Trump in his efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

President Nawrocki was already known as a strong supporter of Donald Trump even before arriving in the United Kingdom for meetings with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and other officials, the BBC reports.

He now argues that, with Vladimir Putin’s Russia threatening Poland as well as Central and Eastern Europe, the American president is the only person who can, as he put it, “solve this problem” and bring the war in Ukraine to an end.

Referring to the massive incursion of Russian drones last September—when more than 20 unmanned aerial vehicles crossed into Poland from Belarus and Ukraine—President Nawrocki described it as “an extraordinary situation,” adding that “until then, no NATO member state had experienced a drone attack on that scale.” Russia, he said, was testing Poland’s defenses and NATO’s solidarity.

The Polish president also thanked the United Kingdom for deploying RAF Typhoon fighter jets to help protect Poland’s borders. He noted that Poland has been in a state of hybrid warfare with Russia since 2021, facing drones and disinformation campaigns.

Such Russian activity in the so-called “grey zone,” he added, shows that “we are living in dangerous times.” He was also asked about his friendship with Donald Trump, particularly in light of the U.S. president’s threats to take Denmark’s autonomous territory of Greenland “by any means,” a move that has shaken Europe and risks fracturing NATO’s 77-year-old alliance.
