Pope Leo XIV has strongly criticized those who minimize the “increasingly evident” impact of rising global temperatures, in his first major statement on climate change, the BBC reports.

Echoing the words of his predecessor, Pope Francis, the new pontiff condemned critics who “mock those who speak about global warming.”

Speaking at Castel Gandolfo near Rome, his remarks are widely seen as an implicit criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump, who last month called climate change a “hoax.”

Pope Leo also called for greater action from citizens worldwide, stressing that there is no room for indifference or resignation in the face of the climate crisis.
