Pope Leo XIV held an official meeting today at the Holy See with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
The discussion focused on the Gaza conflict, emphasizing the urgent need for a lasting ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian access, and the release of all hostages. Both leaders also highlighted the importance of a two-state solution as the only path to lasting peace.
“It is imperative to ensure the release of all hostages, achieve an urgent and permanent ceasefire, facilitate safe humanitarian access to the most affected areas, and guarantee full respect for international humanitarian law,” stated the Holy See in an official release.
Following the meeting, President Herzog posted on X (formerly Twitter), reaffirming Israel’s commitment to protecting Christian communities in the region:
“Israel is committed to the safety and well-being of Christian communities in the Holy Land. We look forward to a day when the peoples of the Middle East, the Children of Abraham, can live together in peace, cooperation, and hope. All faith and goodwill leaders must unite in the call for the immediate release of hostages as a fundamental step toward a better future for the region,” Herzog wrote.
