Pope Leoni XIV emphasized that Europe must be included in any peace agreement for Ukraine, criticizing what he described as an attempt by the Trump administration to “undermine” the U.S.-Europe alliance.

Seeking a peace deal without involving Europe in negotiations is unrealistic, given that the war is taking place in Europe,” the Pope said.

He added that security guarantees are needed both now and in the future, and that Europe must play a central role. “Unfortunately, not everyone understands this, but I believe there is an excellent opportunity for European leaders to unite and pursue a solution together,” he stated.

The Trump administration recently released a U.S. national security strategy that aggressively challenges the U.S.-Europe alliance.

Leoni noted that the strategy, as he read it, “would represent a major shift in what for many years was a true alliance between Europe and the United States.

He also criticized comments by Donald Trump, suggesting an attempt to dismantle what he believes should remain a strong alliance today and in the future. While some in the U.S. may support this approach, the Pope added, “I think many others would view it differently.

Trump’s remarks have drawn further reactions after a recent interview with Politico, in which he labeled Europe as weak, describing its leaders as “people who talk a lot but do little.”
