Pope Leo XIV and Iran have reacted following statements by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

“Today, as we all know, there was a threat against the entire people of Iran, and this is unacceptable,” Pope Leo XIV told reporters as he departed Villa Barberini in Castel Gandolfo, referring to Trump’s comments.

Meanwhile, Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir-Saeed Iravani, called for the resumption of diplomatic activity and for a resolution of the crisis. He stated at the UN Security Council that “the Secretary-General’s personal envoy is currently traveling to Tehran to continue consultations.” Iravani added that Iran “is ready to engage constructively in all genuine diplomatic efforts” aimed at ending the conflict and restoring stability in this strategic maritime region.

However, Iran has warned that it will not remain passive in the face of threats it considers “war crimes” by Trump. Ambassador Iravani emphasized that Tehran will exercise its right to self-defense “without hesitation,” approving “immediate and proportional measures” in response to any U.S. action, and called on the international community to act “before it is too late.”
