Portugal announced that it will officially recognize the State of Palestine on Sunday, becoming the latest Western country to shift its policy as the war in the Gaza Strip shows no signs of slowing.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made the announcement ahead of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. Similar announcements are reportedly being prepared by France, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.
Israel condemned the move, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stating that it “rewards terror” following the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
