A 5.5-magnitude earthquake has struck Meiktila, a small town in central Myanmar, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, reports Rks News.

The tremor comes as the country is still grappling with relief and recovery efforts following the massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake that hit the central region on March 28.

According to international media, there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties from this latest quake, which is one of the strongest among the hundreds of aftershocks recorded since last month’s disaster.

“As of Friday, the death toll from the March 28 quake had reached 3,649, with 5,018 injured,” said Major General Zaw Min Tun, spokesperson for Myanmar’s military government.

Myanmar’s Meteorological Department stated that Sunday’s quake occurred near Wundwin township, approximately 97 kilometers south of Mandalay, at a depth of 20 kilometers.

Meanwhile, the United Nations warned last week that the aftermath of the March 28 quake is likely to worsen the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the country, where civil conflict has displaced over 3 million people.
