Amid a large number of canceled flights, officials in several southern states warned citizens on Saturday to avoid travel due to hazardous road conditions, particularly on secondary roads.

The winter storm, accompanied by snow and low temperatures, is moving through states along the eastern coastline of the country. By the end of the day, temperatures are expected to drop further, increasing the risk of turning roadways into icy, dangerous corridors.

According to Scott Carroll, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Atlanta, the greatest risks will be on secondary roads, as major highways are mostly clear.

Several airports, including those in Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina, have announced disruptions to travel.

Some airlines reported delays of several hours.

By midday Saturday, more than 300 flights in and out of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta had been canceled, and nearly 500 others were delayed, according to the flight tracking service ‘FlightAware’.

Over 200 flights, both inbound and outbound, were canceled in Charlotte, with nearly 200 others delayed. /VOA
