In Albania, President Bajram Begaj has started consultations with political parties regarding the date for the upcoming parliamentary elections. The initial meetings were held with leaders of several smaller parties represented in parliament. The consultations will continue until Monday, when discussions with the two main parties, the Socialist Party and the Democratic Party, are scheduled.
According to the Albanian Constitution, elections must be held within a period from April 15 to May 14. During today’s meetings, political representatives suggested different dates for the elections, with some proposing May 14 as the preferred option. However, others insisted that the date of the Political Community meeting, which will bring together leaders from 40 European countries, should be clarified first. They argued that elections could not take place shortly after this forum, as it might give the ruling Socialist Party a noticeable advantage.
In a Facebook post, President Begaj emphasized that the decision on the election date is just the first step in ensuring a fair and transparent election process. He added that the decree to set the election date should mark the beginning of an intensive process of consultations and accountability for all political actors, both government and opposition.
