Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, said that Europe’s response to oil and gas supply disruptions in the Middle East and rising energy prices must be carefully limited and short-term.

“It is important that any short-term measures do not delay the decarbonization of the energy system, do not increase demand for oil and gas, remain temporary and targeted, and minimize fiscal costs,” von der Leyen wrote in a letter.
