On May 21–22, Kosovo’s President Vjosa Osmani paid a historic state visit to Switzerland, the first such visit ever by a President of Kosovo, following an invitation by Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter. The visit marks a milestone in the diplomatic relationship between the two countries, highlighting mutual cooperation and shared values.
High Honors and Official Meetings
Osmani was welcomed with military honors at the Bundesplatz in Bern and held meetings with Swiss President Keller-Sutter and members of the Federal Council. She also addressed the Swiss Parliament and participated in a joint press conference.
Kosovo’s delegation included mayors Ramiz Lladrovci (Drenas), Xhafer Gashi (Obiliq), and Qemajl Aliu (Shtime).
In a Facebook post, Osmani expressed her gratitude:
“This historic visit marks the beginning of a new chapter in the partnership between our countries and peoples.”
Gratitude to Switzerland and the Diaspora
In her speech at the Swiss Federal Palace, Osmani thanked Switzerland for its steadfast support during Kosovo’s most difficult times. She praised the Kosovar diaspora:
“From sheltering minds like Einstein and Thomas Mann, to Madeleine Albright, and hundreds of thousands of Kosovars—this country has offered refuge and hope. Today, their children are doctors, engineers, artists, and entrepreneurs.”
She called on diaspora members to be role models:
“No matter your profession or platform, be a force for good. Living here is not only a privilege—it is a responsibility.”
She also highlighted footballer Xherdan Shaqiri as a symbol of successful integration and inspiration.
Comment on Kosovo’s Political Situation
During the joint press conference, Osmani expressed concern about the political deadlock in Kosovo following the February elections:
“The delays in forming the Assembly are harming our citizens. Without a functional Assembly, we cannot ratify international agreements.”
Despite the gridlock, she remained optimistic:
“I believe the political parties will soon reach a consensus, placing the state’s interest above all.”
Swiss President Acknowledges Kosovo’s Role
President Keller-Sutter reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to regional stability, recognizing Kosovo’s significance in the Western Balkans’ security and reiterating Swiss support for Kosovo’s membership in multilateral organizations. She emphasized:
“Stability in the Balkans is essential for Europe’s security.”
She also noted Switzerland’s continued presence in KFOR, ensuring peace in the region.
State Dinner and Final Remarks
On the evening of May 22, a state dinner was hosted by Keller-Sutter and the Federal Council, joined by many members of the Kosovar diaspora. Osmani raised a toast for the friendship and future cooperation between the two nations.
In her farewell message, she warmly thanked the diaspora:
“Children of those who once arrived as workers and refugees are now strengthening communities across Switzerland. Every day, they help advance the well-being of their new home—Switzerland.”
She concluded that the visit was historic, opening a new chapter of deepening friendship and strategic partnership.
