Professor Natalija Jovanović from the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš says she expects a large demonstration of civic energy and calls for rebuilding state institutions during the student-organized gathering scheduled for March 1.

Speaking on N1, Jovanović said that public sentiment over the past year suggests the country may be entering the final phase of what she described as a “dictatorial regime.” She emphasized that student activism has played a key role in mobilizing citizens across the country.

According to her, students’ campaigns over the past year have awakened public engagement, reminding people that citizens should be the sovereign force in their own state. She argued that institutions had been weakened, but that change must come through organized civic action and not only through a change of government but also through systemic reforms.

Jovanović also stressed the need to establish stronger oversight mechanisms and accountability, including penalties for misuse of public office and political influence in state institutions.

Discussing pressure on critics of the authorities, particularly in the education sector, she said many educators face retaliation and have limited protection, adding that professional solidarity alone is often not enough to counter such pressures.

Looking ahead to the March 1 rally in Niš, Jovanović said she expects a renewed show of public support and collective energy for democratic reforms, similar to the demonstrations held on the same date last year.
