Progress Report: Kosovo Police Showed High Professionalism in Response to Banjska Terrorist Attack

RKS NEWS

The European Union has released its latest Progress Report today, highlighting Kosovo Police’s response to the terrorist attack in Banjska.

The report praises Kosovo Police, noting a high level of professionalism.

“The response to the September 2023 attack in Banjska demonstrated a high level of professionalism by Kosovo Police. Kosovo Police has recruited two new generations of Kosovo Serb officers, and the Special Prosecution has hired nine additional special prosecutors. The number of indictments in organized crime cases has steadily increased.

A new law for the Special Prosecution enables the establishment of multidisciplinary investigative teams for complex cases and provides a legal basis for the Special Investigation Unit of the police to address high-level corruption cases. Kosovo also adopted a new drug strategy, making the National Drug Observatory operational.

Kosovo has improved migration governance and conducted an information campaign on visa-free travel to the EU, which took effect on January 1, 2024. Additionally, Kosovo adopted a new law for the Civil Registration Agency. Recommendations from last year’s Commission report have been partially implemented and remain largely valid,” the report states.

Furthermore, the report mentions that Kosovo must amend its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing laws to align with relevant EU directives and increase convictions for individuals involved in money laundering.
