Prosecutor Requests One-Month Detention for J.V. in Zubin Potok Ibër-Lepenc Explosion Case

The Special Prosecutor’s Office has requested a one-month detention for J.V., the individual arrested in connection with the deadly explosion at the Ibër-Lepenc canal in Zubin Potok on November 29, 2024. The hearing for the accused began on December 3, 2024, in the Pristina Court.

Court Hearing Delayed, Detention Request Filed
The court session, initially scheduled for 10:30 AM, began later than planned. Mirlinda Gashi, spokesperson for the Pristina Court, confirmed that the Special Prosecutor has officially requested the one-month detention for J.V. in the ongoing case of the Ibër-Lepenc canal explosion.

Second Arrest and Ongoing Investigations
Alongside J.V., Dragisha Viqentijeviq has also been arrested in connection with the terrorist act. He, too, is facing a one-month detention period. On December 2, 2024, the Special Prosecutor confirmed the release of another detainee, D.M., who had been held for 48 hours.

The investigation into the explosion continues, with authorities working to uncover the full scope of the attack. On November 30, 2024, Kosovo Police, in coordination with the Special Prosecutor’s Office, carried out searches at multiple locations, seizing various weapons and devices. Ten individuals were brought in for questioning on charges including terrorism, illegal possession of weapons, and endangering public installations.

Explosion Damages Ibër-Lepenc Canal Infrastructure
The explosion at the Ibër-Lepenc canal in Zubin Potok resulted in significant damage to critical infrastructure. The Kosovo Government has publicly stated that the attack was orchestrated by Serbia and carried out by professional operatives. The incident has been condemned by both the United States and the European Union.

EU High Representative Josep Borrell condemned the attack, labeling it a “terrorist attack,” while Kosovo’s Minister of Economy, Artane Rizvanolli, assured the public that despite the damage, efforts were made to secure the country’s energy supply. Temporary pipes were installed to ensure water flow for the cooling of the “Kosova B” power plant, with these being replaced by a container on December 2, 2024.

International Condemnation and NATO Involvement
The explosion has drawn widespread international condemnation. The United States and the European Union have both condemned the attack. In addition, NATO’s peacekeeping mission, KFOR, deployed teams to the explosion site to assess the situation and provide support.

Continued Efforts to Ensure Security
Kosovo authorities have reiterated their commitment to holding those responsible accountable. The Special Prosecutor’s Office continues its investigation, and the government has called for international support to prevent further escalation.
