The Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Skopje has proposed replacing the detention measure against former First Deputy Prime Minister Artan Grubi with house arrest and confiscation of his travel document.

According to the prosecution, most of the evidence in the case has already been secured, the suspect voluntarily reported to law enforcement, and there are indications that his personal safety may be at risk in detention.

Authorities stated that the decision was also influenced by reports from competent institutions suggesting possible security threats not only to Grubi but also to members of his family.

Arrest and Investigation

Grubi was arrested earlier today after appearing at the Blace border crossing at around 06:10 a.m., where he was immediately detained by police for further procedures.

He is under investigation for alleged abuse of official position, corruption, and violations in public procurement procedures related to the operations and contracts of the State Lottery of North Macedonia.

Alleged Financial Damage

Prosecutors claim the disputed decisions and contracts may have caused financial damage estimated at about 500 million denars (over €8 million) to the institution’s budget. The investigation also alleges that certain economic entities were favored through contested procedures.

Earlier, the court had ordered pre-trial detention, and authorities had previously listed him as wanted after he failed to appear before judicial bodies.
