Following the death of 27-year-old Agon Zejnullahu in the custody of the Kosovo Police, the walls of the police station in Lipjan have been covered with protest graffiti, expressing the revolt and concern of citizens.
“Police Kill You”: Messages of Outrage
Messages such as “Kosovo Police crushes you until it kills you,” “Police have blood on their hands,” “Police kill you,” and “Who protects us from the Police?” have been spray-painted on the police building by the Collective for Feminist Thought and Action.
“The night before last, several police officers violently arrested and killed Agon Zejnullahu in the middle of Lipjan. The police brutality that left Agon breathless was not an isolated misuse of force and power, but a norm that permeates the relationship the institution of the police has created with civilians,” their statement reads. “Brutality is essential to the existence and function of the police. Interaction through violence, intimidation, dehumanization, harassment, and attempted control is routine for many of us who encounter this institution.”
Call for Collective Action and Justice
According to the Collective, the shocking exposure of this violence “that left Agon Zejnullahu dead, besides distorting the violent nature of the police, is also a critical moment for collective consciousness.”
“His killing, now visually recorded in our memory, must make us move, organize, and resist violence which is never accidental and isolated. We call for social mobilization for the safety of each and every one of us, and to demand post-mortem justice for Agon,” the call concludes.
