For the fourth consecutive day, citizens gathered on the streets across Serbia to protest against police brutality and the attacks on demonstrators. The protests continued this evening, with specific gatherings reported in several cities.
Updates from the Ground
In Niš, citizens gathered in front of the Police Department, where they were met with a police cordon pushing them back. The protest was organized to support four students who had been detained.
In Novi Bečej, demonstrators protesting in front of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) offices were met by police, party activists, and men dressed in black. Protesters ultimately agreed to disperse and return later.
In Belgrade’s Voždovac neighborhood, a protest began in front of the local police station to support a citizen who was reportedly arrested after he defended an elderly neighbor from a police officer.
In Požarevac, supporters of the SNS gathered in front of their party’s offices.
Background on the Protests
The recent wave of protests began four days ago, a day after SNS supporters attacked demonstrators in Vrbas and Bela Palanka. The movement gained momentum due to numerous incidents of police brutality, particularly noted during the protests in Valjevo. The previous night, the SNS office in Valjevo was set on fire, and the city court and administration buildings were vandalized. In Novi Sad and Belgrade, protesters also threw stones and paint at the offices of other political parties.
