Citizens in Valjevo have taken to the streets in protest against the proposed lithium mine. Thousands rallied against the agreement between Serbia and Germany, which preceded a meeting between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in Belgrade.

The protests were organized spontaneously through social media, without political party involvement. Nova.rs reports that the Serbian government should be concerned as this issue could affect the entire country, with protests planned in Loznica tomorrow.

The demonstration in Valjevo was a surprise to many. Amid the July heatwave and vacation season, residents gathered quietly to send a clear message: no to the lithium mine that threatens their city.

This follows a recent visit by the German Chancellor to Belgrade, where a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the EU and Serbia for a strategic partnership on sustainable raw materials, signaling the potential opening of a lithium mine in Serbia.
