Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved a new naval strategy aimed at fully restoring Russia’s position as one of the world’s leading naval powers. This was announced by Kremlin aide Nikolai Patrushev in an interview published on Monday.

According to most public rankings, Russia currently holds the third most powerful navy globally, after China and the United States, despite a series of losses suffered by its navy in the Ukraine war, Reuters reports.

Patrushev, a former KGB officer who served with Putin in St. Petersburg during the Soviet era, stated that the new naval strategy, titled “Strategy for the Development of the Russian Navy until 2050,” was approved by Putin in late May.

“Russia’s position as one of the world’s greatest naval powers is gradually recovering,” Patrushev told the Russian newspaper “Argumenty i Fakty.”
