Russian President Vladimir Putin convened a meeting of the Russian Security Council following a lengthy phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian state media reported on Monday, citing Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov.
According to Ushakov, Putin briefed the Security Council in detail about his discussion with Trump, which focused on the ongoing war in Ukraine and future diplomatic efforts.
Both leaders reportedly agreed to hold a summit on the conflict in Ukraine, signaling what Trump described as “significant progress” during the two-hour phone call.
“The call was very productive, and we made great progress,” Trump said in remarks to reporters at the White House.
The U.S. President added that high-level talks between senior advisers — including Secretary of State Marco Rubio — would begin next week to prepare the groundwork for the meeting.
“President Putin and I will meet later in Budapest, Hungary, to assess whether we can finally bring an end to this shameful war,” Trump declared.
Trump also revealed that Putin had congratulated him on his recent Middle East peace agreement, describing it as an achievement “he had dreamed of for centuries.”
The planned summit in Budapest comes amid renewed diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and explore a potential ceasefire framework in Ukraine.
