Russian President Vladimir Putin today met with Ali Larijani, a close advisor to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, at the Kremlin to discuss the Iranian nuclear program.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Larijani conveyed “assessments of the deteriorating situation in the Middle East and concerning the Iranian nuclear program.” Putin, in turn, expressed “Russia’s well-known positions on how to stabilize the situation in the region and on a political solution to the Iranian nuclear program,” Peskov added.
This meeting comes after German diplomatic sources told Agence France-Presse today that the United Kingdom, France, and Germany plan to hold further talks with Tehran about its nuclear program in the coming days. According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, citing anonymous sources, Tehran has agreed to hold discussions with the three European countries. Consultations on the date and location of these talks are currently underway, Tasnim added.
Western countries and Israel suspect that Tehran is seeking to acquire an atomic bomb, a claim Iran denies, emphasizing its right to pursue a nuclear program for civilian purposes.
