Following the release of the Reporters Without Borders report highlighting increasing pressure on journalists in Kosovo, ambassadors from the QUINT countries – France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States – along with representatives of the European Union, met this morning with the head of the Association of Journalists of Kosovo (AGK), Xhemajl Rexha, and media lawyer Flutura Kusari.
The meeting focused on the current state of press freedom in Kosovo, amid growing concerns about the safety and autonomy of journalists. German Ambassador to Kosovo, Jörn Rohde, shared details of the meeting on the social media platform X, emphasizing that free and independent journalism is a cornerstone of any democratic society.
“Free and independent journalism is a cornerstone of democracy and deserves to be respected and protected,” Ambassador Rohde wrote, accompanying his message with the flags of the QUINT countries and Kosovo.
This unified stance from QUINT and the EU sends a clear message to Kosovo’s institutions to take concrete steps to safeguard journalists’ rights and uphold democratic standards of transparency and accountability.
