Former chairman of the Albanian National Council, Ragmi Mustafi, has personally removed graffiti bearing the name of war criminal Ratko Mladić that appeared in the center of Bujanoc.
Mustafi, assisted by his young son, decided to act after authorities remained silent about the graffiti glorifying the convicted orchestrator of the Srebrenica massacre and other war crimes in the former Yugoslavia.
“I could not stay silent. In the center of Bujanoc, where our children walk, the name of the war criminal who ordered the Srebrenica massacre — ‘РАТКО МЛАДИЋ’ — was written in red, along with nationalist symbols. Institutions were silent. The police were silent. Even those who speak of ‘multiethnicity’ — silent. I couldn’t. I went with my son Lisari and erased it publicly. Not for myself. For the children of this city. For those who were killed. For those still waiting for justice. For those who no longer dare to speak but never accepted this. We erased a name — but also a shame,” Mustafi stated.
Just a day earlier, Mustafi had raised alarm about the graffiti, calling it an unacceptable provocation and a threat to security and coexistence in a town with an Albanian majority.
He also recalled past incidents, including the vandalization of a billboard honoring Commander Lleshi on the anniversary of his death in August, and previous anti-Albanian graffiti with calls for violence that had also gone unanswered by authorities.
