Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama has issued a formal message on the occasion of Alphabet Day, commemorating 117 years since the unification of the Albanian alphabet at the historic Congress of Manastir.

In his statement, Rama emphasized that this day “sealed the Albanian language not only as a linguistic code, but as a universe of identity, thought, and culture.”

Happy Alphabet Day, the day that sealed the Albanian language not just as a linguistic system, but as a universe of identity, thought, and cultures—on a path toward the future where the Albanian word continues to build the history of a nation whose spirit lies in its language,” Rama wrote.

The Congress of Manastir, held from 14–22 November 1908, brought together 50 delegates from 26 cities, cultural clubs, and associations. It resulted in the adoption of the Latin-based alphabet, modified to fit the phonetic system of the Albanian language.
This decision remains one of the most important milestones in Albanian national history, laying the groundwork for the cultural and political unity that preceded the Declaration of Independence in 1912.
