Republican Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky announced on Tuesday that he has introduced a bill in Congress aimed at withdrawing the United States from NATO.
He argues that the decades-old alliance has lost its purpose, costs American taxpayers excessively, and risks involving the U.S. in foreign wars.
“NATO is a relic of the Cold War. The United States should withdraw and use these funds to defend our country, not socialist states. Today I introduced HR 6508 to end our NATO membership,” Massie wrote on platform X, according to Fox News, as reported by Klankosova.
His Republican colleague, Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, announced that she has co-sponsored the initiative.
In a press statement, Massie emphasized that the U.S. has spent “trillions of dollars” participating in NATO while risking involvement in foreign conflicts. “Our Constitution does not authorize permanent foreign engagements. America should not be the security umbrella for the world—especially when wealthy countries refuse to pay for their own defense,” he said.
Earlier this year, Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah introduced a Senate bill called the “Not A Trusted Organization Act” (NATO Act). Massie’s initiative in the House of Representatives is the companion version of this proposal.
The bill relies on Article 13 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which allows a member country to withdraw one year after formally notifying the U.S. government, which then informs the other allies.
This development is expected to spark broad debate in American political circles as well as within the alliance itself.
