Dutch Member of the European Parliament Thijs Reuten called on EU institutions to lift the restrictive measures imposed on Kosovo and urged the European Commission to prepare an opinion on Kosovo’s EU membership application.
Speaking in the European Parliament, Reuten said that this could happen even without the approval of the European Council, which holds the responsibility for such decisions. He emphasized that it was time to normalize relations between all EU members and Kosovo.
“Remove these restrictive measures, normalize relations between all EU members and Kosovo, recognize it, and accept the application. Even without the approval of the Council, the Commission could already prepare an opinion on Kosovo’s application,” Reuten stated.
He argued that Kosovo is a partner of the EU and accused the European Council of blocking Kosovo’s membership request.
“Kosovo is a partner that shares our values and geopolitical views. However, the European Council continues to block the simple acceptance of this partner’s membership request. Is this how you treat a partner?” he said.
