Foreign ministers from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom plan to hold nuclear talks with their Iranian counterpart this Friday in Geneva, a German diplomatic source told Reuters.

The ministers are expected to first meet with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas at the Permanent Mission of Germany to the UN in Geneva, followed by a joint meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister.

The European initiative comes amid rising fears of escalation in the Middle East, after Israel launched widespread military strikes on Iran last week, and Iran retaliated with a wave of missile attacks targeting Israeli positions.

U.S. President Donald Trump has refused to confirm whether the United States will join Israel’s military campaign, deepening concerns over further escalation of the crisis.

The goal of the talks, according to the German source, is to secure strong assurances from Iran that its nuclear program is strictly for civilian use. The talks are reportedly being held in coordination with the United States.

Following Friday’s high-level meeting, the ministers intend to initiate a structured expert-level dialogue.

Israel has stated that its military campaign aims to eliminate Iran’s capacity to develop a nuclear weapon.
