Reuters reported today that officials from the Trump administration held discussions with Venezuela’s Interior Minister, Diosdado Cabello, months before the U.S. operation aimed at capturing President Nicolás Maduro, and have remained in contact with him since, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
According to Reuters, U.S. officials warned Cabello, 62, against using the security services or militant supporters of the ruling party structures he oversees to target the country’s opposition, four sources told the news agency.
This security apparatus, which includes intelligence services, police, and the armed forces, has largely remained intact following the U.S. raid on January 3.
