The Maltese Roberta Metsola will be elected today for a second term as President of the European Parliament.
The candidate from the group of the European People’s Party, Metsola, has only one opponent.
The Left Group has chosen to appoint the Spanish Irene Montero, former minister of the Podemos party.
Metsola benefits from the support of the pro-European majority groups (except the EPP, Socialists and Democrats and Renew liberals), but also from the Greens.
The far-right groups have decided not to present their candidate for the presidency of the European Parliament.
Metsola’s second term will last two and a half years.
In January 2027, the presidency of the European Parliament must pass to the Socialists and Democrats.
