Protests erupted in Bucharest last night after Romania’s Central Election Commission barred far-right politician Calin Gheorghescu from running in the re-elections. The first round of elections had been annulled by the Constitutional Court due to alleged Russian interference. Both Moscow and Gheorghescu deny the accusations.

Three police officers were injured as Gheorghescu’s supporters gathered outside the election commission’s headquarters. Gheorghescu, known for glorifying Romanian fascists and advocating for Romania’s annexation of parts of Ukraine, appeared the following day alongside leaders of two far-right parties.

“Thank you to the Romanian people for everything they are doing, but I once again urge them to act peacefully, with a clear understanding of reality. We must not resort to violence or anything similar to what happened last night. We continue with great faith in this country’s future,” Gheorghescu stated.

He announced plans to appeal the ban to the Constitutional Court, which had previously nullified the first election round in December based on security reports alleging Russian interference. Gheorghescu had secured nearly 23% of the vote in the annulled round.

“This is not a democratic process; it’s nonsense. It’s a disgrace for the country’s leadership. It’s clear that Gheorghescu has different views, and that’s why they won’t accept him,” one supporter said.

Another citizen expressed broader concerns: “The future doesn’t look bright—not just for Romania but for all of Europe and even across the ocean. Ever since Trump was elected, everything has become more chaotic.”

Gheorghescu is under criminal investigation for six charges, including membership in a fascist organization and campaign finance fraud. Despite the annulment, controversy, and even support from Elon Musk, his popularity appears to be rising—polls suggest his approval rating has doubled.

The first round of the re-election is scheduled for May 4.
