The lower house of the Romanian Parliament approved on Tuesday a draft law authorizing the donation of a Patriot missile defense system to Ukraine.
On Monday, the government submitted the law to Parliament for approval. Once President Klaus Iohannis signs the law, the government will issue an order to proceed with the donation, Reuters reports.
Romania has decided to provide Kyiv with one of its two operational Patriot systems, part of five such systems and other strategic air defense units promised by NATO countries, provided that allies replace it with another Patriot system later.
Romania, which has been a NATO member since 2004, shares a 650 km border with Ukraine, and fragments of Russian drones have repeatedly fallen on its territory as Moscow attacks Ukrainian ports across the Danube River.
