The Workers’ Unions of the Public Radio Television of Kosovo (RTK) have announced that the public broadcaster is on the brink of financial collapse. They have alerted diplomatic missions and the European Federation of Journalists about the dire situation.
Budget Standoff Threatens Operations and Mission
According to the Union’s statement, RTK is facing a potential financial breakdown due to the non-allocation of its budget for the second half of 2025. This critical issue “endangers the regular functioning of the institution, the work of hundreds of employees, and the public mission guaranteed by the Constitution,” the Union stated.
They argue that the inaction of state institutions is putting the future of the public broadcaster at serious risk. The Union is urging all decision-makers to take urgent steps to unblock the budget and ensure the continuity of work and salaries for RTK employees.
“We call on public opinion, institutions, and media to stay informed and unite in support of the public broadcaster, as a shared asset of citizens and democracy,” the statement continued.
The budget for RTK is approved by the Assembly of Kosovo, which has remained unconstituted since the February 9 elections. Today marks the 51st attempt to constitute the Assembly.
