The Union of Workers of the Radio Television of Kosovo (SPERTK) has announced the cancellation of its protest scheduled for Monday, August 18. The decision comes after the Government of Kosovo approved a €2.5 million loan for RTK to address its financial crisis and ensure worker salaries are paid.
The union expressed gratitude to all of its colleagues, especially those who continued to work without pay to ensure the public was informed. SPERTK also thanked various international and local organizations for their solidarity and support, including the Association of Journalists of Kosovo (AGK), the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), and the Albanian Journalists and Media Workers’ Union (SGPM).
A Look Ahead: Demands for the New Assembly
While the immediate crisis has been averted, SPERTK stated that its long-term goal remains to protect RTK and ensure its stable funding. The union has issued a list of demands for the new Assembly, urging it to:
- Urgently approve the new RTK Law.
- Ensure independent funding and a budget increase for the public broadcaster.
- Change the financial reporting method to once a year.
- Complete the RTK Board and fill all leadership positions in accordance with the law.
The union also confirmed that it will no longer proceed with a planned lawsuit and will destroy all documents collected for that purpose, thanking lawyer Yll Zeka for his pro bono assistance.
