Former U.S. diplomat James Rubin stated that Kosovo is not currently a top priority for U.S. President Donald Trump, emphasizing that the administration’s main focus is on China, Russia, Ukraine, Iran, Venezuela, and global trade issues.

Rubin, speaking to Klan Kosova, said:

“I don’t think it is at the forefront of his mind. It is more a matter for the State Department, so I wouldn’t worry about it.”

Advice for Kosovo’s Leadership

Rubin advised Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti to address the concerns of the European Union and the United States in the context of the ongoing dialogue with Serbia.

He emphasized a key difference among regional countries:

“Serbia is the only country where Russian television, propaganda, and influence exist. When the U.S. State Department and White House understand that the real problem lies in Belgrade, it reduces the likelihood of creating difficulties for Kosovo.”

Rubin urged that the burden of compromise should be placed on Belgrade, as Serbia maintains close ties with Russia.

“Kosovo should ensure that responses place the responsibility on Belgrade to make compromises, because they are the ones working closely with Russia,” Rubin said.

Rubin Reflects on Support for Hashim Thaçi

Rubin also described his recent testimony in support of former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi at The Hague as a “privilege of a lifetime.” He stated:

“I recently did my best to help the people of Kosovo in this trial, and I wish them the best. I am confident they will make decisions without my involvement or detailed attacks on anyone.”
“It was a privilege of my life to be there, offering help to the people of Kosovo, and we are still proud of that.”

Rubin’s comments underline the importance of placing the responsibility for progress on Serbia, while recognizing the U.S. and EU’s role in supporting Kosovo’s international positioning.
