U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Saturday that the incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace this week was unacceptable, though it remains unclear whether Russia deliberately directed the drones into Polish territory.
Rubio told reporters: “We think it is an unacceptable, unfortunate, and dangerous development.”
He added: “There is no doubt about this: the drones were launched intentionally. The question is whether they were specifically intended to enter Poland.”
Rubio warned that if evidence proves the drones were aimed at Poland, it would mark a highly escalatory action. He also underlined the need for close coordination with allies before making any further decisions, Reuters reported.
Poland, meanwhile, rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s suggestion that the incursion might have been a mistake. Poland’s Foreign Minister stressed that the country expects concrete actions demonstrating solidarity with Warsaw.
At the United Nations, the U.S. described the violation of Polish airspace as “alarming” and reaffirmed its commitment to “defend every inch of NATO territory.” Russia, for its part, denied that the drones were intended to strike targets in Poland, insisting they were part of operations against Ukraine.
