U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today in Jerusalem, with talks expected to focus on Israel’s controversial strike in Qatar, which targeted senior Hamas leaders.
The strike, carried out last week on Qatari territory — a close U.S. ally — has triggered international outrage, including in Washington, where it was publicly criticized by President Donald Trump.
“Clearly, we are not pleased with this. The President was not pleased with this. Now we must move forward and understand what comes next,” Rubio said, according to the BBC.
The high-level meeting comes at a moment of heightened diplomatic tension, as Arab leaders gather for a summit to show support for Qatar.
Meanwhile, the Qatari Prime Minister has urged the international community to end what he called “double standards” and to hold Israel accountable for its actions.
