U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that there have been discussions with Ukraine regarding territorial concessions during a meeting in Saudi Arabia, and that they are hoping for a positive response to the ceasefire proposal from Russia.
“If Russia says no, many things will become clearer for us. There is no military solution to this conflict. Ukraine needs sufficient deterrence against future attacks,” Rubio told reporters at Shannon Airport at the beginning of a visit to the Republic of Ireland, as reported by Euronews and transmitted by Gazeta Sinjali.
The U.S. Secretary said that he would not characterize the proposed mineral agreement between Ukraine and the U.S. as a security guarantee.
“The U.S. will have contacts with Russia today, but we still don’t know what Moscow’s response to the proposed ceasefire will be. European sanctions against Russia will be on the table in any ceasefire agreement,” Rubio added.
