Russia and Iran have further strengthened their alliance with a new gas agreement signed on April 25, under which Moscow will deliver 55 billion cubic meters of gas annually to Tehran.
Iran has emerged as one of Russia’s key allies during the ongoing war in Ukraine, with both Moscow and Tehran facing severe Western sanctions.
Mohsen Paknejad, the Iranian Minister of Oil, visited Moscow to sign the new gas deal with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Tsivilev. Paknejad announced that the agreement stipulates an annual delivery of 55 billion cubic meters of gas, which will be transported through Azerbaijan, a country that geographically separates the two nations.
While the specific pricing details have yet to be finalized, Tsivilev confirmed that deliveries will begin later this year.
The gas agreement follows a strategic partnership deal signed earlier this year between Russia and Iran.
This deal comes at a time when the United States is exerting pressure on Iran to abandon its nuclear program.
Paknejad was in Moscow on the same day that Steve Witkoff, the U.S. envoy, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.
Kyiv and Western countries have accused Iran of supplying weapons to Moscow for its military offensive in Ukraine.
