Russia carried out one of the most sustained attacks on Ukraine’s capital and other regions on Sunday, launching hundreds of drones and missiles, killing at least four people and injuring dozens, according to Ukrainian authorities.
Ukraine’s military reported that 595 drones and 48 missiles were launched overnight, with its air defences successfully intercepting 568 drones and 43 missiles. The strikes primarily targeted Kyiv, but also affected regions including Zaporizhzhia, where at least 16 people were injured.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy described the attacks as lasting over 12 hours, causing damage to a cardiology clinic, factories, and residential buildings. Kyiv residents awoke to explosions, drones overhead, and booming air defences, with smoke from strike sites visible across the morning sky.
Moscow claimed the operation targeted military-industrial infrastructure, including airfields, and denied deliberately attacking civilians, despite widespread destruction of residential areas and thousands of casualties since the war began.
Zelenskiy urged the international community to take decisive measures to cut off Russia’s energy revenues, stressing that Ukraine has yet to secure punitive sanctions from the U.S.
Emergency services reported four confirmed deaths nationwide, including a 12-year-old girl, and 67 wounded. Residents continued to sift through destroyed homes and sought shelter in metro stations while monitoring events on mobile devices.
Ukraine’s defence capabilities remain stretched, with additional Patriot missile systems from Israel deployed and more expected this autumn to help protect the country’s skies.
