Russia has voiced renewed opposition to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system, warning that such a project could destabilize global security.

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, stated that the United States is undermining the foundations of strategic stability with this plan.

“Through the Golden Dome initiative, the U.S. is dismantling decades of arms control efforts and pushing the world closer to a new arms race,” she said.

The $175 billion project, introduced by Trump, aims to neutralize long-range missile threats from countries like China and Russia. The Kremlin has consistently warned that the construction of such a shield could eventually force Moscow and Washington back into nuclear arms control negotiations, according to Reuters.

Just days earlier, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stressed that the global implications of the Golden Dome system cannot be ignored.

The project, reminiscent of Ronald Reagan’s “Star Wars” Strategic Defense Initiative, has raised alarms in both Moscow and Beijing, who see it as a potential shift in the balance of nuclear deterrence.
