Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has praised former U.S. President Donald Trump, calling him a pragmatist with “sound reasoning” regarding his approach to ending the war in Ukraine. In contrast, Lavrov accused European powers of seeking to prolong the conflict, reports RFE.

Speaking to the Russian military newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda, Lavrov stated that while the U.S. and Russia may never agree on everything, they have historically found common ground on shared interests. He noted that Trump’s slogan, Make America Great Again (MAGA), reflects a shift in Washington’s approach to global affairs.

Lavrov criticized Europe’s role in the war, calling it the source of “all global tragedies” over the past 500 years, including colonialism, the Napoleonic Wars, World Wars I and II, and Hitler’s rise. He dismissed European proposals to send peacekeeping forces to Ukraine, claiming that Moscow no longer trusts Kyiv following the collapse of the Minsk agreements.

The remarks come after a tense meeting at the White House between Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. European leaders later rallied in support of Zelensky.
